Do I need a permit to remodel my kitchen in San Jose?
It depends on the work. The City lists standalone cosmetic updates such as painting and cabinet resurfacing as work that does not require a permit. Kitchen projects involving electrical, plumbing, mechanical or structural changes may require permits and review. Confirm the requirements for the complete scope before work starts.
Can you remodel my kitchen without moving the sink or stove?
Yes. THB can plan a remodel around existing appliance and sink locations. New cabinetry, countertops, lighting and finishes can still make a substantial change. The existing condition and any proposed utility work need to be assessed, even when the layout stays similar.
Should I reface my cabinets or replace them?
Refacing is worth discussing when the cabinet boxes are in suitable condition and you like the existing arrangement. Replacement offers more flexibility when you need different storage, cabinet dimensions or a new layout. THB can review the existing cabinets with you before you decide.
How long will my kitchen remodel take?
The schedule depends on the design, permit requirements, material lead times and construction scope. Planning and ordering happen before the on-site remodeling stage. Ask for a schedule that identifies when the kitchen will be unavailable and which selections need to be finalized before demolition.
Can I stay at home during construction?
That depends on the scope, site access and how construction can be separated from occupied rooms. Expect interruptions to normal kitchen use. Discuss dust protection, access routes, utility shutdowns and a temporary arrangement for food storage and meals before construction begins.
Can you remove a wall or add an island?
THB can assess these changes during planning. Wall removal requires a review of structure and any utilities in the wall. An island needs enough room for circulation, seating and appliance operation, with utility requirements considered where applicable.
What should I bring to the first consultation?
Bring your property address, photos of the current kitchen, a short list of problems you want to solve and a few inspiration images. Share your budget goals, preferred timing and any appliances you want to keep or purchase. Finished plans are not needed to start the conversation.
